Dealing with Sensitive Teeth and Sharp Pain

It can be frustrating when you have sensitive teeth. While eating or drinking, you suddenly feel sharp pain. It might be temporary, but it’s recurring. You will also stop eating because it’s too painful. Once it subsides, you no longer want to eat. Several factors might contribute to having sensitive teeth. According to Regency House Dental, the leading dentist in Cheltenham, you should immediately address this problem. Don’t wait until it worsens before going for a dental appointment. These are some ways to avoid having sensitive teeth.

Desensitizing toothpaste

Not all toothpastes have the same properties. You will find one that can help block the pain due to sensitive teeth. Some of them are available as over-the-counter products. You don’t have to get a prescription from your dentist to buy one. However, if you don’t know which brand to trust, you can ask for recommendations from your dentist.

Fluoride treatment

If you decide to go to your dentist to treat sensitive teeth, you will undergo a fluoride treatment. It’s a process of applying fluoride to the sensitive areas of the teeth to strengthen the tooth enamel. It’s the part that becomes vulnerable to pain. You can also continue the application at home. Your dentist will tell you how to use it.

Bonding

Another procedure that works for people with sensitive teeth is bonding resin application. In this instance, a local anaesthetic might be necessary. It can be somewhat painful.

Surgical gum graft

This process involves the movement of a small amount of gum tissue to the affected area. It’s usually the exposed roots. The goal is to reduce sensitivity. This procedure might be costly, though. Ask your dentist first to determine if it’s necessary. It also helps if you get extra dental insurance to feel confident in paying the cost. You can also get insurance for other aesthetic procedures.

Root canal

This procedure is the last thing you want. It’s painful, and the process looks scary. However, it’s effective in fighting severe pain. If the problem is the soft core of your teeth, you should consider having a root canal. It can eliminate tooth sensitivity.

Be careful with what you eat

Avoid foods and drinks that may worsen your sensitive teeth. Cold desserts such as ice cream are a big no. If you’re eating a large dish, slice it into smaller pieces. Chew it carefully and avoid hurting your teeth.

Be gentle when brushing

You have to brush your teeth regularly. Flossing also removes the debris stuck in between the spaces of your teeth. Be gentle when brushing and flossing. Don’t be too hard on your teeth. Even if you feel that it’s too painful, you should still be gentle.

Hopefully, these tips can help get rid of sensitive teeth. Don’t hesitate to go to your dentist if the pain doesn’t go away. You might have underlying issues, and other procedures might be necessary. Listen to your dentist’s recommendations to prevent recurring problems.
